DSIC and China Merchants signed contract for the first order of 4 large LNG Carriers

On March 31, DSIC, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, and CSSC Trading successfully undertook the new construction project of 2+2 175,000cbm large-scale LNG carriers with China Merchants Energy Shipping (a subsidiary of China Merchants Group). The representatives of all parties were in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Dalian, and Beijing. Sign the construction contract in the form of a “cloud contract”.

Miao Jianmin, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of China Merchants Group, Hu Jianhua, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and General Manager, Lei Fanpei, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Chairman of China Shipbuilding Corporation, Yang Jincheng, Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and General Manager, Xie Chunlin, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of China Merchants Energy Shipping, DSIC Party Secretary and Chairman Yang Zhizhong, Deputy Secretary of CSSC Party Committee and General Manager Hu Kai and other leaders attended the signing ceremony.

This is the third shipyard in China to receive an order for a large LNG carrier after Hudong Zhonghua and Jiangnan Shipbuilding. This cooperation, will further enhance the overall strength of China’s shipbuilding industry, provide equipment support for China’s energy transportation security, and contribute to the realization of the “dual carbon” goal.

According to the announcement issued by China Merchants, the two new ships have a combined price of US$380 million and are expected to be delivered in the second half of 2025 and the first half of 2026. The two alternative ships cost $200 million each.

China Merchants Steamship said that the LNG ship ordered this time is in line with the company’s development strategy and the 14th Five-Year Plan and reflects the company’s vision to vigorously expand the low-carbon business and clean energy transportation in the future. The long-term development of the company and the company will further build a weak-cycle growth shipping platform.

According to reports, the ship type of this project is independently developed by DSIC, with a total length of 295 meters, a width of 46.4 meters, a depth of 26.2 meters, a design draft of 11.5 meters, a designed service speed of 19.5 knots, and a total cargo hold capacity of 175,000cbm. The cargo hold capacity can very well match the loading capacity of the 160,000cbm storage tanks of the current mainstream shore stations. At the same time, compared with the current mainstream 170,000cbm LNG ships in the market, in addition to the advantages of the cargo hold capacity, it also has a fleet of ships. Deployment interchangeability to improve the flexibility of ship operations. This ship has achieved a comprehensive balance in terms of economy, flexibility, and compatibility, and can dock at most of the world’s large LNG shore stations, with excellent portability and ship-to-shore compatibility.

This type of ship is equipped with the latest LNG dual-fuel low-speed main engine, which can meet the most stringent emission standards of the International Maritime Organization in both fuel and gas modes, further reducing the main engine’s fuel consumption and gas consumption. The application of the new double skeg line type further improves the hydrodynamic performance and enhances the safety redundancy of the propulsion system. With the GTT Mark III Flex type cargo containment system, the evaporation rate is reduced to 0.085%, and the standard configuration of the reliquefaction device can flexibly handle LNG boil-off gas. The ship type development has completed the basic design tasks and has been approved in principle by Lloyd’s Register of Shipping and China Classification Society.

Since 2000, DSIC has made every effort to enter the LNG ship market, and has completed the research and development of large-scale LNG ships, including the research and development of ship types, construction and test technology, engineering management technology, and simulation tank construction technology, and has fully mastered the research and development and design of large-scale LNG ships. The construction process and management technology have laid a solid foundation for undertaking large-scale LNG carriers.

Over the years, DSIC has joined hands with GTT and a number of classification societies, through continuous research and development and optimization, based on No.96 membrane-type product development has been recognized by GTT and classification societies. At the same time, DSIC has also successfully completed the construction of the world’s largest No.96 membrane-type LNG ship simulation cabin and the world’s first fully enclosed MARK III LNG carrier simulation cabin, which has been obtained by the French GTT, the China Classification Society, the United Kingdom Certificates of accreditation from the world’s major classification societies such as classification societies, Det Norske Veritas, American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, etc.

In the field of other gas ships, DSIC has also continuously increased investment in research and development in recent years and has obtained orders for many real ships. In 2015, DSIC contracted to build the world’s first very large C-type tank ethane ethylene carrier with a loading capacity of 85,000cbm. This project carries the world’s largest volume of a single C-type tank. At present, the two ships of the project have been successfully delivered and are in good operating condition, and have been well received by the shipowners and charterers.

In 2018, DSIC contracted to build the world’s largest C-type tank LNG bunkering vessel built by a domestic shipyard general contractor. In 2019, DSIC and COSCO SHIPPING Energy jointly launched the world’s first LNG dual-fuel VLCC new construction project. The C-type storage tank used in this project was independently designed and built by DSIC. The project has been delivered and successfully operated on February 28, 2022.

In 2021, DSIC and Norway’s Aurora Borealis successfully signed two construction contracts for the world’s first 7,500cbm liquefied carbon dioxide carrier.
