GTT cooperate with Shell to develop an innovative liquid hydrogen carrier design

Energy giant Shell and French LNG containment specialist GTT will collaborate on new technologies for liquid hydrogen (LH2) transport, including an initial LH2 carrier design

In order to meet the demand for zero-carbon energy in the energy transition process, the market demand for hydrogen will increase. The ability to transport large quantities of hydrogen in liquefied form at -250°C is one of the technical challenges that must be addressed in order to build a reliable, efficient, and competitive hydrogen supply chain. Therefore, Shell and GTT have signed this cooperation agreement as part of Shell‘s strategy to develop the hydrogen energy supply chain, which will be achieved by creating scalable and safe LH2 maritime technology. 

Under the signed agreement, GTT will be responsible for the development of an initial LH2 carrier design and an LH2 cargo containment system for medium-sized LH2 carriers. Among them, Shell provides expertise, insurance, technology and innovative solutions, and GTT designs cryogenic containment systems for the storage and transport of liquefied gases.

GTT has over 50 years of history and proven expertise in LNG transportation and storage containment systems and cryogenic technology. GTT‘s technical knowledge and innovative capabilities are important assets for developing the best sealing solutions for the maritime transport of liquefied hydrogen on an industrial scale.
