A few days ago, the construction contract of a 14,000cbm LNG bunkering carrier tailored by China Shipbuilding Corporation Hudong Zhonghua to Anhui Changjiang LNG Co., Ltd. came into effect, marking the world’s first and China’s first-made LNG bunkering carrier. The new ship type has been fully transferred from the design blueprint to the construction of the actual ship, creating demonstration equipment for the implementation of the “gasification of the Yangtze River” and “dual carbon” strategies.
The ship is independently developed by Hudong Zhonghua and adopts the design of completely independent intellectual property rights, which can realize the dual functions of one-stop LNG bunkering and transportation directly from the river to the sea. The ship has a total length of 130 meters, a molded width of 23.60 meters, and a molded depth of 15.00 meters. It is classified by the China Classification Society (CCS). In order to meet the requirements of height limit and safe passage of the Yangtze River Bridge in the case of extreme high and low water levels in the Yangtze River waterway, and weighing the overall consideration of economy, convenience, and efficiency, the cargo draft adjustment of the ship type has been specially designed. LNG bunkering and transportation are combined into one, with bunkering function at the same time, LNG bunkering for LNG fuel-powered ships and full-process professional services such as inerting, cooling, gas purging, and cabin warming can be provided. The unique shallow draft design not only meets the design requirements of the ocean-going unlimited navigation area, but also realizes the seaworthiness under the extremely low water level of the Yangtze River channel, making the ship suitable for the unlimited navigation area, and can pass through the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge throughout the year to realize the river-sea navigation. Direct one-stop LNG bunkering transportation, called “Yangtze River Customized” LNG bunkering carrier.
The ship adopts the B-type containment system independently developed by Hudong-Zhonghua and authorized by the National Patent. This is also the first engineering application of the independent technical containment system on a domestic LNG carrier. The system has the technical characteristics of high capacity utilization rate, strong anti-sloshing ability, no liquid level loading limit, and safety and reliability. As a supporting demonstration project for domestic LNG core equipment, the ship has also realized the first set of applications of key equipment such as high and low load compressors, reliquefaction units, LNG submersible pumps, ship-to-ship conveying systems, and LNG cryogenic valves. The localization rate is about 80%.
The ship adopts a dual-fuel power azimuth propulsion system to achieve flexible maneuvering in narrow inland waterways, and has an enhanced intelligent integrated automation system of “intelligent platform + intelligent navigation + intelligent energy efficiency”.
Hudong Zhonghua is one of the few shipbuildings in the world that has a full range of large (174,000cbm), medium (80,000cbm), and small (14,000cbm), covering ocean and inland river LNG carriers R&D, design and construction capabilities. It will not only further consolidate Hudong Zhonghua’s important position in the global LNG carrier construction market, but also lay a solid foundation for China’s shipbuilding industry to comprehensively improve the LNG high-end equipment industry chain and supply chain level.
Anhui Changjiang LNG Co., Ltd. is located in Wuhu Sanshan Economic Development Zone, with a registered capital of 999 million CNY. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary invested and established by Huaihe Energy and Gas Group. Mainly responsible for the construction and operation of the project group centered on the Wuhu LNG Inland River Receiving (Transfer) Station Project. The project group consists of the LNG receiving station, terminal, LNG ship bunkering station, LNG tank container peak regulation reserve, supporting gas pipelines, and LNG power plants. It consists of 5 types of projects including projects.
As the first inland river LNG receiving and transfer station project in China, it was included in the “Outline of the Yangtze River Delta Regional Integrated Development Plan”. The designed LNG handling capacity of the project is 1.5 million tons/year. The terminal will construct 3 LNG handling berths of 0.6-40,000cbm, with 2 million tons/year LNG handling capacity, 1 10,000-ton container berth, and 1 5,000-ton berth. Grade inland LNG bunkering berth. Two 100,000cbm LNG storage tanks and supporting facilities will be constructed in the rear land area, and a 400,000cbm LNG storage tank area will be reserved. The project uses a coastline of 930.4 meters. Simultaneously build a project group centered on the Wuhu LNG Inland River Receiving (Transfer) Station Project, including LNG receiving reserves, LNG ship bunkering stations, natural gas power generation, LNG tank containers, and supporting gas pipelines, driving investment of about 10 billion CNY.
In the future, the company will rely on the Wuhu LNG receiving station to build an LNG production, supply, transportation, storage, distribution (sales) system, and carry out trade, transportation, storage, vehicle and ship filling, cold energy utilization, LNG power transformation, LNG special equipment training and certification Through project operation, the Wuhu LNG receiving station has become an important resource supply point for natural gas in the Yangtze River Delta and an LNG filling parent station that “gasifies the Yangtze River”, and becomes an LNG regional settlement center, trade center, and circulation center.
As the main artery of inland shipping in my country, the annual transportation volume of the Yangtze River reaches 3 billion tons, accounting for more than 60% of the total inland shipping. Changjiang Shipping has long used diesel, heavy oil, etc. as its ship power fuel. Compared with ships using LNG as fuel, its comprehensive pollution emissions are 70% higher. It is imperative to speed up the conversion of oil to gas from shipping in the Yangtze River and implement the strategy of “gasification of the Yangtze River”.
According to relevant plans, before 2035, the seven LNG receiving stations along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River will have a total production capacity of 13 million tons per year, requiring at least 80 small LNG ships with a capacity of more than 6,000cbm. The entry into force of the ship’s construction contract and the future completion and delivery will open up the LNG sea-to-river channel, create a sample and model for the “gasification of the Yangtze River” project, and promote the green development of shipping in the Yangtze River, which will have an important demonstration and leading effect.
It is reported that the ship is scheduled to be put into operation in August 2024. At that time, the LNG water transport of the Yangtze River trunk line can be directly reached from Shanghai to Wuhu, Anhui, so that the strategy of “gasification of the Yangtze River” can be implemented.
