Hyundai Mipo Shipbuilding wins another order for 05 1,800TEU Container Ship

On March 21, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd (KSOE), the secondary holding company responsible for the shipbuilding business of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, announced that the company signed a construction contract for five 1,800TEU container ships with shipowners in Africa, with a contract value of 211.1 billion won (approximately 211.1 billion won). $175 million).

The five new ships undertaken this time will be built by Hyundai Mipo Shipbuilding in Ulsan, and are expected to be delivered to ship owners in the first half of 2024.

So far, the number of new ship orders undertaken by Korea Shipbuilding Marine has reached 64 this year, and the contract value is about 6.6 billion US dollars, reaching 37.8% of the annual order target of 17.44 billion US dollars.

According to the International Ship Network, Hyundai Mipo Shipbuilding has undertaken orders for 16 feeder container ships this year. On January 7, the company signed a construction contract for three 1800TEU-class feeder container ships with Capital Maritime & Trading Corp (CMTC), a subsidiary of Greek shipowner Evangelos Marinakis, with a contract value of about US$96 million. On January 18, the company announced that it had signed a construction contract for four 2500TEU-class feeder container ships with its own shipowner, Changjin Merchant Shipping, with a contract value of about US$160 million. On March 11, the company signed a construction contract for a 22,000-cubic-meter-class LPG carrier and four 2,800-TEU-class container ships with shipowners in Asia and Oceania, with a total contract value of about US$236 million.

People in the Korean shipbuilding industry said that Hyundai Mipo Shipbuilding, which has shown a strong appearance in the field of small and medium-sized ships, will continue to undertake more new ship orders in the field of regional container ships in 2022.

As a shipbuilding subsidiary of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, Hyundai Mipo Shipbuilding, with its solid strength, not only ranks first in the world in the construction of medium-sized oil/chemical tankers but also seizes the opportunity of the recovery of the maritime industry to vigorously undertake orders for feeder container ships. In 2021, Hyundai Mipo Shipbuilding will receive a total of 104 new ship orders, including 39 regional container ships, ranking first, including 10 ships worth more than US$600 million 2,000TEU ice-class LNG dual-fuel container ship from CMA-CGM.

The 1,800-2,999TEU class feeder container ship is one of the main ship types built by Hyundai Mipo Shipbuilding. With the prosperity of the shipping industry in recent years, while orders for large container ships continue to appear, orders for feeder container ships are also growing. According to statistics, the proportion of old ships with 2000-2999TEU class containers will increase to 66% by 2023, so the market prospect of the new shipbuilding market for feeder container ships below 3000TEU class is more optimistic.
