Kurushima Shipbuilding delivers NYK the second LNG-Powered Vehicles Carrier - PLUMERIA LEADER

On March 24, the second large-scale LNG-powered car carrier “PLUMERIA LEADER” built by Shin Kurushima Toyohashi Shipbuilding for Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) Line was completed and delivered. This is the sister ship of the “SAKURA LEADER”, which will be delivered in 2020, and will be used for the transportation of Toyota vehicles. This type of ship is 199.95 meters long, 38 meters wide, and has a gross tonnage of 73,500 tons. It can carry 7,000 vehicles and is currently one of the largest car carriers in the world.

The new ships feature additional technologies that increase energy efficiency by 40 percent and reduce CO2 emissions. The LNG-powered car carrier is also expected to reduce sulfur oxide emissions by 99 percent and nitrogen oxide emissions by 86 percent compared with conventional heavy oil engines. This series of 7,000-car space car carriers has been optimized with a wider hull to reduce the impact of reduced vehicle capacity due to the size of the LNG fuel tank.

NYK has positioned LNG fuel as one of the bridge technologies to enable future zero-emission ships. In 2018, Nippon Yusen ordered the first LNG-powered car carrier “SAKURA LEADER” at Shinkurishima Shipbuilding, and in February 2020, it ordered the second “PLUMERIA LEADER”.

As part of NYK‘s plans, the company will deploy 20 LNG-powered car carriers by 2028. The total investment of these 20 LNG-powered ships exceeds 200 billion yen (about 1.819 billion US dollars), which is equivalent to 20% of its existing fleet capacity.

3月24日,日本新来岛造船为日本邮船建造的第二艘大型LNG动力汽车运输船“PLUMERIA LEADER”号完工交付。

这是2020年交付的“SAKURA LEADER”号的姐妹船,将用于从事丰田汽车的整车运输工作。该型船船长199.95米,宽38米,总吨位73500吨,能够搭载7000辆汽车,是目前全球最大的汽车运输船之一。

新船具备了能够将能效提升40%并减少二氧化碳排放的附加技术。与传统的重油发动机相比,这种LNG动力汽车运输船还有望减少99%的硫氧化物排放和86%的氮氧化物排放。这一系列7000车位汽车运输船进行了优化设计,采用了更宽的船体,减少由于LNG燃料箱尺寸造成运载车辆量下降的影响。

日本邮船已经将LNG燃料定位为实现未来零排放船舶的桥梁技术之一。2018年,日本邮船在新来岛造船订造了首艘LNG动力汽车运输船“SAKURA LEADER”号,2020年2月又增订了第二艘“PLUMERIA LEADER”号。

按照日本邮船的规划,该公司到2028年将部署20艘LNG动力汽车运输船规划的一部分。这20艘LNG动力船投资总额超过2000亿日元(约合18.19亿美元),相当于其现有船队运力的20%。
