LNG-powered fleets and LNG bunkering infrastructure are fast developing

2021 is a year of rapid development for LNG as a marine fuel and as a tool for decarbonization transition. In 2021, the number of orders for LNG-powered ships will reach a record level, and the global layout of LNG bunkering infrastructure is also developing rapidly. 

The production of bio-LNG (bio-LNG) and renewable synthetic LNG (renewable synthetic LNG) will increase significantly in 2021. As the shipping industry moves towards zero carbon, LNG, as a “transition” fuel, is leading the shipping industry towards a cleaner and more environmentally friendly future. 

2021 hits record high annual orders for LNG-powered new buildings

According to Clarksons, LNG-powered newbuilding orders have risen sharply since January 2021, approaching 30% of total orders in tonnage. For VLCC new buildings, more than 50% of the orders are for LNG-powered or LNG-ready ships.

According to SEA LNG, new building orders for LNG-powered containerships have increased fivefold since January 2020. Over the next few years, more than 90% of Pure Car and Truck Carriers (car carriers, ro-ro PCTC) will use LNG dual-fuel engines. Oil tankers and dry bulk carriers are no exception. In the past 18 months, the proportion of LNG-fuelled ships in newbuilding orders for oil tankers and dry bulk carriers has increased by 7 times and 2 times respectively. According to Gibson‘s statistics, nearly a quarter of all tanker newbuilding orders are fueled by LNG, including 20 VLCCs, 41 Aframax/ocean product tankers, 2 Suezmax, and 40 LNG-ready tankers.

In 2021, the number of orders for new ships powered by LNG will increase exponentially, and more than ten liner companies have ordered many ships. This shows that more and more shipowners and ship operators agree to use LNG as a transition fuel.

The current order for newbuildings is important for the global merchant fleet to move towards zero-carbon shipping by enabling the use of bio-LNG and renewable synthetic LNG without the need for expensive retrofits.

Expanding Infrastructure Scope

Given the growing number of LNG-powered new buildings, DNV predicts that demand for the fuel will triple to more than 3.5 million tonnes by 2024. To support this demand, the construction of LNG bunkering infrastructure will continue in full swing.

According to the DNV report, 33 LNG bunkering vessels (BVs) are currently in operation and another 42 are on order and in discussions. By the end of 2022, the Nordics, the Mediterranean, the United States, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, China, Singapore, Brazil, and South Africa will have LNG bunkering infrastructure. In addition to this, other regions such as Australia are also investing in LNG bunkering infrastructure.

Clarkson estimates that there are currently 141 ports in the world providing LNG bunkering services, and by the end of 2022, that will grow to 170.

Other agencies predict that by the end of this century, LNG fuel supply will account for 10% of global fuel supply.
