MSC orders 28 dual-fuel Container Ships

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), which has become the world’s largest container shipping company, has not stopped its expansion. This new “ship leader” has decided to invest more than 21.3 billion yuan to order as many as 28 dual-fuel container ships, which is more than the previous even more.

According to trade wind news, MSC has signed a letter of intent with New Times Shipbuilding and Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding for the construction of a total of 22 8,000TEU containers, including 14 New Times Shipbuilding and 8 Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding. In addition, South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries Group will also undertake orders for six 7,700TEU dual-fuel container ships. The cost of each new ship will exceed 120 million US dollars, and the total value of the 28 ships will reach 3.36 billion US dollars (about 21.307 billion yuan).

At the beginning of this year, MSC announced that it would order 8,000TEU dual-fuel container ships. At that time, it was reported that the company was in contact with “all” Chinese and Korean shipyards and planned to order 18+6 dual-fuel 8,000TEU container ships. Compared with this figure, MSC has greatly increased the actual number of ships booked.

According to the latest report from the ship brokerage firm BRS, due to the large number of container ship and LNG ship orders last year, the delivery schedule of Asian shipyards is almost full. After this wave of orders frenzy, most shipyards in China are already “full” in the next three years, and the situation in South Korea is similar, BRS said.

It is reported that currently only three shipyards in China, Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, Guangzhou Shipbuilding International and New Times Shipbuilding, are still interested in taking orders for medium-sized container ships, but the ship space of these three shipyards is relatively limited. If MSC finalizes the order of 22 ships from the two shipyards, the current 8,000TEU ship positions of New Times Shipbuilding and Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding between 2024 and 2025 are basically full.

For Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, this is the second order it has undertaken in the container ship market after its first order for 10 conventional power 5,500TEU container ships from CMA CGM last year, and it is also the first time the company has cooperated with MSC. In 2013, New Era Shipbuilding built and delivered seven 8,800TEU container ships for Mediterranean Shipping.

In the past two years, MSC has been active in the newbuilding and second-hand ship market, rapidly expanding its fleet, and officially surpassed Maersk at the end of last year to become the world’s largest container shipping company. According to Alphaliner data, MSC currently operates 651 ships with a total capacity of about 4,334,900 TEUs, including 321 owned ships and 340 leased ships.

At the same time, MSC ranks first in the world in the number of orders in hand, with a total of 77 ships of 1.1944 million TEU, accounting for 27.6% of the existing fleet. If these 28 orders take effect, the number of orders in hand of MSC will exceed 100 ships.

Last year, the number of new container ship orders reached a record high, reaching a total of 569 ships of 4.3 million TEU for the whole year, with a contract value of up to 42.8 billion US dollars. This order level is even higher than the previous record level of 3.3 million TEU in 2007 by 29%. %, equivalent to 3.5 times the average order volume for the 10-year period ending in 2020. Since 2022, there have been 124 orders for new ships in the container ship market, with a total capacity of about 857,600 TEU.
