DNV has approved the design of fuel cell-powered LNG carriers for Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries SHI.

DNV granted the basic design approval for commercialization.

According to SHI, this will be the world’s first large cargo ship powered by solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) running on LNG, contributing to reducing emissions.

In order to design and develop such ships, SHI collaborates with Bloom Energy, the U.S.-based manufacturer of solid oxide fuel cells on the JDA since 2020. The target of SHI and Bloom Energy is to present the design to potential customers in 2022.
